The Kieninger Trap

The pinned e2 pawn cannot take on d3, so the knight mates.

Opening: Budapest Gambit. Set by Black. Level: Intermediate.

The moves

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e5 3.dxe5 Ng4 4.Bf4 Nc6 5.Nf3 Bb4+ 6.Nbd2 Qe7 7.a3 Ngxe5 8.axb4 Nd3#

The mistake: White plays axb4 (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e5 3.dxe5 Ng4 4.Bf4 Nc6 5.Nf3 Bb4+ 6.Nbd2 Qe7 7.a3 Ngxe5 8.axb4)

It only works after a mistake

White must play axb4 for it to work. The Budapest Gambit is risky; the trap needs White to take the bishop on b4.

Final position after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e5 3.dxe5 Ng4 4.Bf4 Nc6 5.Nf3 Bb4+ 6.Nbd2 Qe7 7.a3 Ngxe5 8.axb4 Nd3#

How to avoid it

Nxe5 instead of taking the bishop.
